One of my favorite parts of this album is that it was recorded with the levels too low. (I think that they fixed this in later pressings) But in my CD changer it would switch to the album and I would have to turn it way up to even hear it. Then, when the album ended and it switched to the next CD, BAM! BECK ODELAY AT FULL BLAST UNTIL I REMEmbered about the soft recording. Got me every time.

I got this album after Fashion Nugget and Prolonging The Magic, so my view may be a little biased compared to those who first known Cake by this album. Well, it's a first album so one can't expect it to be better than Fashion Nugget, which is a Masterwork by my standards, but it has qualities of its own, notably the juvenile stance in lyrics and composition. I like to see this album as a guided overview of Cake's style variations. The first part (2-6) is sensible, ironic in a soft way, the second part (7,8,11,12) is the 'I like people to sing' attitude that's always apparent in Cake's concerts and then there's the downright dumb/funny lyrics and songs that form the last part of the album. I'd say it's always a good time to listen to this one as it's modest in its pretentions yet there's no bad song in it (except maybe Comanche which you can skip easily).
